Simple Bath Towel Robe Instructions

1. Measure around your hips and bust. Use the largest of the two for the next step.

2. Add 13" to that measurement. Divide your total in half. Use this measurement to determine if you need 2 or 4 bath towels. If the width of one  bath towel is more than your measurement then buy only 2 bath towels. If the width of one bath towel is less that your measurement, then buy 4 bath towels.

3. Now to make your robe, divide your measurement from step 2 in half. Then if you are using 4 bath towels, place two of them together as shown. Or if you are only using 2 bath towels, fold on in half as shown. Cut off the top edges (the finished edges that are usually hemmed) where the towel changes from terry cloth.

4. Take the measurement from step 2 and divide by 4. Now cut the width of the towels to this measurement. If you are using a folded towel, do not cut the towel if your measurement matches the width of the folded towel.

5. Measure down from the top of towel on the finished side 3". Measure in from the unfinished edge (or folded edge) 3 1/2". Now measure down from the top edge on the cut (or folded) side 3/4".

6. Connect your marks with lines as shown.Curve the neckline as shown. Cut out your shoulder and neckline.

7. If you have two back pieces, sew the center back seam together. Serge the seam allowance. If you only have one back piece, move on to step 8.

8. To make the front of the robe, repeat step 3. If you have only one bath towel for the front, cut it in half down the center first.

 9. Place the back on the front and cut the shoulder the same as the back. Do not cut the neck, but mark the shoulder/neckline intersection. Cut the shoulder.

10. Next decide how low you want to begin the zipper on the center front. I suggest about 12"-14" down. Fold the excess (the lapel) of the top of the fold back pieces as shown.

11. Now take the top edges of the towels that you saved from step 3. Use your seam ripper or scissors to open the seams. Press the pieces flat. This piece will be used as a binding.

12. Bind the back neck and the two front edges from the top, down to 10" past your zipper mark. See diagram for how to use binding.

13. Stitch the center front closed from the bottom up to the edge of the binding. Finish the seam allowances with a serger if you have one.

14. Pin the zipper in place and stitch behind the binding on the center front.

15. Fold the front collars open then place the front and back shoulders right sides together. Stitch the shoulder seams closed, then serge the seam allowances. Fold the seam allowance towards the back and topstitch with a 1/4" stitch to keep it flat.

16. Pull the robe over your head and decide where you want to place your pockets (face towels). Pin them in place and topstitch pockets.

17. Open the robe out flat and sew your sleeves (hand towels) to the body of the robe Find the center  of the hand towel and match that center point to the shoulder of your robe as shown.

18. Match the robe side seams. Stitch the side seams closed from under the sleeves, to the bottom. You can leave slits open on the sides if you desire. No serging is necessary because of the nice finished edges. Your robe is finished. We hope you like it!
